習近平來到武漢東湖國家自主創新示範區，了解大陸光谷發展情況。看到光纖通信、3D列印、生物質能源等成果，總書記感到很欣慰。他說，一個國家只是經濟體量大，還不能代表強。國家富強靠什麼？靠自主創新，靠技術，靠人才，科技是國家強盛之基。

根據新華社報導，武漢東湖國家自主創新示範區暨『中國光谷』是大陸最大的光纖光纜和光電器件研發生產基地。2001年獲批為國家光電子產業基地即『武漢·中國光谷』。目前，示範區註冊企業達2萬多家，初步形成以光電子資訊產業為主導的產業格局，去(2012)年企業總收入5006億元人民幣，增長31.3%。
