雪梨發生挾持人質事件，至今有3男2女共5人逃脫，警方估計人質總數少於30人，但未確認具體人數。有記者現場點數約15名人質，有男有女，有老有少。社群網路上出現群眾在現場自拍的照片，引來大批網友反感。

當地第7頻道（Channel 7）辦公室在事發現場對面，該台記者從辦公室望向咖啡館，看見槍手每隔2小時左右，便會更換站在窗前的人質，員工從廚房取出食物給人質充飢。

推特和Instagram上出現旁觀者在現場的自拍照片，部分人露出笑容，還舉了勝利手勢。

澳洲雪梨電台收到其中一名人質的母親來電，說下午收到兒子簡訊：「我在雪梨的咖啡館室裡，心臟要停止跳動了。」被問到情況如何，他回「我還好，但不能說話」，之後就沒有再發簡訊給母親。

雪梨歌劇網站公布，因為雪梨發生挾持人質事件，今晚演出取消，保障觀眾安全。
