Although languages change 表示「雖然語言會變,但......」。我們若只說「雖然.....」,大家不知道所以,可見後面的結論更重要,所以 although 的子句只是「副詞」用法而已,稱為副詞子句,不可能是主詞,主要子句是 they do so rather slowly。 that 引導當主詞的就是它,不過有了 languages change,我們更知道 they 指 languages, 而 do so 是指 change。
所以,若把隱藏的部份都詳細翻譯出來,意思就是:
雖然語言會改變,但相對於人一生的壽命,它們的改變算是緩慢,這對我們來說,是幸運的。

既然 although languages change 不是主詞,就不能改寫為 Although languages change is fortunate。
