聯邦政府的數據顯示，美國7月石油出口達到57年來新高，凸顯出美國作為石油供應國地位的崛起。

能源資訊管理局（EIA）的數據指出，美國7月原油出口平均每日達40.1萬桶，比2013年7月暴增將近三倍，也是連續第2個月原油出口創1957年3月來最高。這些出口的原油大多運往加拿大。

美國石油生產近年來蓬勃發展，主要受惠於水平鑽井法（horizontal drilling）與水力壓裂法（hydraulic fracturing）等新開採技術，讓業者得以開採頁岩油。美國7月每日石油產量平均為850萬桶，是1986年來最高。

隨著美國原油產量增加，石油業者紛紛遊說政府解除自1975年設立的原油出口禁令，他們主張，當地煉油業者難以處理如此大量的輕原油。
