日本南部海岸離島青島原有的漁村人口凋零，目前貓的數量為人類的6倍，成為名符其實的貓島。

青島（Aoshima）長1.6公里，一開始是因為漁夫要對付漁船的鼠患，於是引進貓。結果貓在青島上繁衍，數量不斷增加。

青島有超過120隻貓，僅剩少許居民，多半是退休老人，在二次大戰後加入離鄉潮外移到城市工作。

從愛媛縣搭船到青島要30分鐘。此地目前僅剩的人類活動便是白天自本島搭船來遊逛的遊客，參觀這個當地熟知的「貓島」。

事實上，島上沒有餐廳、汽車、商店，連小攤販也沒有。青島不是觀光勝地，但是愛貓人士並不抱怨。
